In C-RAN architecture, digitized baseband complex in-phase(I) and quadrature(Q) samples are transported over the high speed links (2.5Gbps~10Gbps) between a BBU(Base Band Unit) to an RRH(Remote Radio Head). The CPRI standard defines this high-speed, constant bit rate, bidirectional master-slave protocol used to connect a BBU and RRH. Such high speed, high precision links in many wireless technologies(HSPA and LTE), require significant transport resources. 
Considering the over sampling and 14 bits linear quantization in CPRI signal, it is possible to realize the suitable I-Q data compression which can maintain required EVM, ACLR, latency and other transport performance.
Recently, a number of I-Q data compression algorithms have been proposed. Those are based on well known signal processing techniques such as decimation/interpolation filtering, block scaling and non-linear quantization. However, there is no solution for guaranteeing the required performance in field environment.
This R&D project is focusing on developing the compression algorithm and realizing as a commercially available system which can reduce data rate at least 50% and satisfy required signal quality.
Currently, various compression techniques are being evaluated using the test system developed by HFR.
