Overview In general, mesh topologies are of a particular interest for survivable communication networks due to their geographical spread and richness of inherent redundancies. Traditionally, a topology design problem of a survivable mesh network needs to consider traffic demands as given condition for the objective of optimizing the utilized capacity. However, this is not applicable for the design of HSR mesh networks considering its unique operation principles that an HSR packet is multiplied to fill all links in the network, as explained in the previous section. Hence all links require an equal capacity. With HSR in place, a full utilization of mesh redundancies can be realized. Thus, designing resilient HSR mesh networks poses the challenge of how to exploit the inherent redundancies efficiently to meet the availability requirement.
